Erect much-branched perennial with a thick rhizome; stems 30-210 cm, densely villous. Leaves lanceolate to oblong, 2-12 x 0,8-2,5 cm, densely villous, serrate, sessile, subamplexicaulI. Inflorescence with glandular and eglandular hairs. Flowers pinkish-purple; petals 8-20 mm; stigma deeply 4-lobed. Capsule 4-10 cm; seeds obovoid, 1-1,5 mm, papillose. Fl. 7-9 Marshes, stream banks etc., s.l.2300 m.
Throughout Europe and Asia, N.E. & S. Africa; introduced in N. America.
