Stout erect perennial; stems simple, 50-250 cm, arising from a thick rootstock, ± strigose above to entirely glabrous. Leaves narrowly lanceolate to lanceolate, 2,5-13 x 0,5-3 cm, glabrous though sometimes pubescent on the underside of the midrib, ± obscurely denticulate. Inflorescence a simple elongate lax raceme. Flowers drooping in bud; petals 8-18 mm, deep pink or magenta; styles much longer than stamens. Capsule 2,5-8 cm; seeds 1-1,4 mm, smooth. Fl. 6-8. Forests, open grassland, rocky slopes, etc., 650-3050 m.
