Stems creeping, branched. Leaves on the branches strongly 4-ranked, those of 2 opposite ranks smaller than those of the other 2, decurrent, dark to pale green. Cones borne at the ends of long peduncles, which are frequently branched at the apex, and are covered with distant, linear-lanceolate leaves, Spores ripe 7-8. Banks, usually in Rhododendron scrub, 50-1000 m.

N. & C. Europe, Apennines, Adzharya . Subsp. complanatum is widespread in N. Temperate regions and on mountains in the Tropics.
