Stems up to 25 cm, erect or ascending-erect, rooting only at the base. Leaves dense, spirally arranged, up to 8 mm, linear-lanceolate, acute, dark green, often bearing gemmae in their axils. Sporophylls similar to the sterile leaves, not borne in cones, but forming fertile zones, alternating with sterile zones on the stems. Spores ripe 7-9. Shady acid rocks and slopes, 900-2700 m.
Arctic and N. Temperate areas; possibly also in the southern hemisphere.
