Biennial or perennant with basal rosettes of leaves. Flowering stems erect, stout, 20-50 cm, simple or occasionally sparsely and shortly branched above; indumentum short and sparse, patent-pilose with glandular and eglandular hairs at internodes but densely villous with c. 6-8 mm hairs at nodes. Basal leaves oblong to ovate-oblong, 2-15 x 1-7 cm, rugose, margin crenate, apex ± obtuse, truncate to cuneate at base, petiole 2-6 cm; indumentum sericeous-tomentose on upper surface, sparsely tomentose beneath. Cauline leaves few , ovate or rarely ovate-lanceolate, 3-7 x 2-4.5 cm, apex acute, subsessile to sessile. Floral leaves sessile, ovate, 1-4.5 x 0.7-3.5 cm, as long as verticillasters above. Verticillasters 8-15, 14-16-flowered, lower remote, 2-4.5 cm apart, upper ± approximate above. Bracteoles lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, 8-14 mm, herbaceous, pilose, tip not spinescent. Pedicels 1.5-4 mm. Calyx sub-bilabiate, subcampanulate, 14-16 mm, villous towards base; teeth unequal, ovate to oblong-acuminate, recurved in fruit, upper and lower teeth 4-5 and 3-4 mm respectively, margin glandular-haired, mucro 0.8-1 mm. Corolla pink, 17-19 mm, tube subexserted, upper and lower lips 5-6.5 and 8-9 mm respectively. Nutlets obovoid, 2.8 x 2.2 mm, slightly winged at base. Fl. 5-7. Open steppe in Quercus scrub, gravelly fields, 900-1250 m.
