Perennial, densely caespitose. Stems 40-100 cm; basal sheaths often dark brown. Stems and leaves with 12-30 strong ridges; pith continuous. Lowest bract with broad sheath, long; inflorescence pseudo-lateral, many-flowered, compact or rarely more lax. Perianth segments usually light to dark brown, ovate, 2-4 mm, subequal, acuminate. Stamens 3, 1/2-2/3 x perianth; anthers 0.4-0.7 mm, usually shorter than filaments. Capsule ovoid to globose, retuse to obtuse, ± equalling perianth. Seeds c. 0.5 mm, without appendages. Fl. 4-7. Damp places, s.l.-1600 m.
