Monoecious. Plant to 80 cm; internodes glabrous. Leaves 10-30 x 0.5-1 mm , minutely spinose-dentate, teeth 5-17 on each side, sometimes also on abaxial surface of midrib. Sheaths 2-3 mm, auricles to 0.5 mm, roundish, dentate. Male flowers with spathe, anthers 1-thecous; female flowers in clusters of 1-2. Fruits c. 2.5 mm. Fl. 6-9. Lakes, ponds, ditches, nr s.l.-1150 m.
