Unarmed shrub, 1-1,5 m. Leaves 5-7 x 7-9 cm, palmately 3-5-lobed with a cordate base. Inflorescence an inclined or drooping 10-20-flowered raceme with a glabrous axis. Bracteoles c. 1 mm. Flowers hermaphrodite, greenish tinged with purple; hypanthium almost flat; sepals patent; petals very small. Fruit globose 6-10 mm diam., red, glabrous. Fl. 6. Cultivated.
Native in W. Europe though widely cultivated elsewhere for its edible berry , and often naturalized.
