Robust herbs to 120 cm. Stems several, simple, of 6-10 internodes; flowers crowded in upper leaf axils, forming a dense head. Leaves lanceolate to broadly ovate, to 40 x 25 cm, with 5-7 prominent veins, glaucous, shortly petiolate. Flowers pedicellate, usually 5-merous. Calyx 10-15 mm, divided to c. 1/3 . Corolla clear yellow, 20-30 mm; lobes linear and ± spreading; subsidiary lobes small or absent. Stamens forming a tube. Stigmas not coiling after anthesis. Capsule ellipsoid, shortly stipitate. Fl. 6-8. Grassy places on hills, 1400-1700 m.

Distinguished from subsp. symphyalldra  Hayek by its free anthers and its stigmas spirally coiled after anthesis. Fl. 7. Amongst tall perennial herbs. c. 1600 m.
