Ascending-erect perennial 30-70 cm. Leaves with 7-10 pairs of oblong to oblong-ovate leaflets, adpressed pilose below, ± glabrous above; stipules brown, membranous, connate or free. Peduncles 2-3 x length of leaves, elongating in fruit. Calyx 5-7 mm, ± spreading pilose, with teeth 2-3 x length of tube. Corolla pink with darker veins; standard 10,5-12 mm; wings c. 2 mm; keel 10-12 mm. Fruit 5-8 mm, pilose, with very short or obsolete teeth on crest, scarcely toothed on disc. Fl. 5-6. In or near cultivation, nr. s.l.-1700 m.
The wild distribution of O. viciifolia is uncertain, but for long it has been widely cultivated as a fodder plant throughout Europe and parts of Asia and is now naturalised in many places.
