Tufted perennial with short rhizomes. Stems erect-ascending, to 40 cm, flattened to trigonous, basal sheaths pale brown, pubescent. Leaves flat, 1-1.5 mm broad, glabrescent, margins scabridulous towards apex. Inflorescence an unequally-rayed simple umbel with few spikelets. Involucral bracts 2, unequal, scabridulous. Spikelets pedicellate, lowermost sessile, ovoid, 6-10 x 3-4 mm. Glumes broadly ovate, 2.2-3.1 x 2-2.5 mm, ferrugineous or golden brown, pubescent in upper part, mucronulate, Style 1.7 mm, glabrous, base dilated; stigmas 2, to 0.75 mm. Nut obovoid, biconvex, 1.3-1.5 x 1.1-1.2 mm, smooth. Fl. 6-8. Marshes, riverbanks, wet places by roadside, sandy places nr sea, s.l.-40m.
