Somewhat caespitose; rhizomes creeping, long, slender. Stems 15-50 cm, slender but rigid, erect, scabrid above; basal sheaths purplish to red-brown. Leaves 1.5-2.5 mm broad, shorter than stems, almost flat. Malespike 1. Female spikes 1-2, ovoid to shortly cylindrical, 5-15 mm, approximate near top of stem, erect, subsessile; lowest bract somewhat longer than its spike but shorter than inflorescence, usually not sheathing, ±patent. Female glumes ovate, acute or  apicuiate, reddish-brown with paler mid-vein, somewhat shorter than utricles. Utricles greyish-green, broadly obovoid, 2-2.6 mm, veinless, densely white puberulent; beak very short or absent, emarginate; style base not thickened. Open, dry forests, moist to dry meadows, 20-2500 m; usually calcicole.
