Densely caespitose. Stems 5-75 cm, bluntly trigonous to semiterete, rigid, smooth; basal sheaths becoming blackish-brown and fibrous. Leaves 1-3 mm broad, c. as long as stems or often somewhat shorter, channelled with often inrolled margins, rigid, smooth, greyish-green. Male spike usually solitary. Female spikes 2-4, subglobose to ovoid or shortly cylindrical, 0.5-2 cm, upper often aggregated and subsessile, 1 lower sometimes remote and shortly pedunculate; lowest bract much longer than inflorescence, leaf-like to setaceous, ± patent, with short sheath, to 0.7 em. Female glumes broadly ovate, mucronate, rusty-brown with paler yellowish mid-vein, hyaline-margined. Utricles greyishgreen to pale greenish-brown, ovoid, 2.8-4.3 mm, often purple-spotted, dull, distinctly many-veined, ± gradually narrowed into smooth, emarginate to shortly bifid beak to 1 mm. Saltmarshes and saline meadows by coast, s.l.-70m.
Coasts of Europe , Black Sea, Crimea, W. Caucasus, Cyprus, Egypt; also on Sara Island . Euro-Sib. element.
