Shrub or small tree up to 6 m. Young twigs subterete, usually smooth. Terminal buds fusiform, 5-18 mm, the scales clearly of differing lengths. Leaves elliptic to obovate, glabrous, often acuminate, very finely serrate, frequently very large. Cymes usually more than 1-flowered. Flowers 4-5-merous. Petals greenish. Fruit broadly winged, pendulous. Seed covered by the orange aril. 2 subspecies may be distinguished:
1. Terminal bud 9-18 mm; leaves 8-17 cm, usually obovate and acuminate subsp. latifolius
1. Terminal bud 5-8 mm; leaves 5-7 cm, usually elliptic and acute subsp. cauconis
