Leaves round or very broadly ovate, usually without a mucro, but sometimes with a very small, much recurved mucro, occasionally emarginate and often glabrous. Flowers weakly zygomorphic, with whitish petals. Three varieties are recognised:
1. Spiny stipules weak, caducous or absent; leaves round, subcordate at base var. inermis
1. Leaves with persistent spiny stipules, or if spineless then with ovate leaves
2. Leaves round-ovate, 30-40 x 20-35 mm var. spinosa
2. Leaves round, 16-20 x 15-18 mm var. aegyptia
