Perennial herb, stems up to 70 cm. Rhizome white, fleshy and scaly. Leaves alternate, the lower pinnate with up to 5 pairs of serrate leaflets, the upper ± simple, serrate. Purplish-black bulbils present in the axils of the upper leaves. Petals white to pale mauve. Siliquae 20-35 mm, often not formed. Fl. 4-6. Shady banks, streamsides, etc., often inforests, s.I.-1800 m.
