Erect, softly tomentose perennial. Stems 17-40 cm, densely leafy. Leaves usually ± densely tomentose to sericeous, narrowly elliptic to elliptic, lower rarely ovate; basal with lamina 9-21 x 2.5-4.5 cm, attenuate into petiole; cauline sessile or lower shortly petiolate, elliptic to narrowly oblong. Cymes not whorled, forming a narrowly ovoid panicle. Calyx lobes ovate to oblong-lanceolate. Corolla red or reddish-purple, fading bluish-violet, 4·5-6·5 mm, limb with ± short, triangular, obtuse to subacute lobes; scales small, triangular. Filaments equal or slightly unequal. Style exserted. Nutlets ovoid, 6.5-10 x 6-11 mm, sparsely glochidiate on dorsal surface; margin elevated, densely glochidiate; tubercles between glochids few or absent. Fl. 5-8. Igneous scree, rocky or turf slopes, roadsides, often by streams, 950-3660 m.
