Erect perennial. Stems stout, several, 35-100 cm, adpressed-pubescent. Basal leaves large, scabrous above and strigose to roughly tomentose beneath; lamina broadly ovate, 10-30 x 7-20 cm, petiole 12-25 cm; apex acute, base cordate; cauline sessile, smaller, lamina of lower ovate, of upper broadly ovate to ± orbicular. Cymes numerous, not whorled, elongating in fruit. Calyx lobes 3-4 mm, ovate, oblong or slightly obovate, rarely slightly unequal, markedly accrescent in fruit. Corolla bluish-purple , 5.5-7mm; scales narrowly triangular, 0.5-1 mm. Filaments very unequal. Nutlets dull brown, 5-7 x 4-5 mm, ovoid, densely glochidiate, marginal glochids much longer than those of dorsal surface; tubercles on dorsal surface inconspicuous or absent. Fl. 5-6. Quercus scrub, moist bushy places, pastures, 1200-2800 m.
