Annual. Stem ascending to erect, 20-26 cm, simple or sparingly branched. Basal leaves broadly spathulate, 5,5-12 x 2,5-5 cm, obtuse or slightly retuse, blade attenuate into very short petiole; cauline smaller, obovate-spathulate to ovate, obtuse, sessile, amplexicaul. Inflorescence very compact in flower. Bracts usually purple-tinged. Calyx divided to c. ½ , lobes lanceolate, subacute, margins glabrous. Corolla yellow below, violet above, 12-15 x 4-5 mm, constricted at throat, tube somewhat curved, lobes short, triangular, subacute to obtuse, recurved. Nutlets dark greyish-brown, c. 5 x 4 mm. Fl. 5. Rocky places, limestone slopes, 200-400 m.
