Tuberculate-hispid biennial or perennial; stems spreading or erect, 15-40 cm. Leaves lanceolate to elliptic, 30-70 x 5-15 mm, ± deeply undulate-dentate. Indumentum dimorphic, with short soft and longer stiff tuberculate hairs. Inflorescence elongating considerably in fruit; bracts small, ovate-lanceolate. Calyx 5-10 mm in flower, accrescent to 15 mm in fruit, divided to ½ into broad obtuse to ± acute lobes. Corolla violet to deep purple, rarely white, tube 6-10 mm, lobes 2-3 mm. Stamens usually inserted at about middle of tube and not overlapping scales. Nutlets c. 2 x 3-4 mm, obliquely ovoid. Fl. 3-5. Pinus brutia forest, sand dunes, waste places, etc., s.l.-900 m.
