Plant densely villous-lanate, eglandular. Stems erect, usually branched above, arising from a short stout caudex. Sterile shoots absent, but caudex bearing small white lanate buds. Lower leaves broadly oblanceolate, up to 5 x 1 cm; upper leaves becoming smaller. Capitula subglobose, c. 6 x 5-8 mm, borne in dense corymbs. Phyllaries strongly cucullate, deep crimson. Marginal flowers female. Fl. 6. On calcareous soil and gravel, 160-400 m.
