Height 15-70 cm. Stems terete, longitudinally striped, spreading woolly-tomentose. Leaves densely silky-tomentose; basal linear-lanceolate, short -petioled, 4-10 x 0.4-1.5 cm, 2-pinnatisect, with 20-50 and more pairs of primary, oblong, pinnatifid segments 2-7 x 1-4 mm; cauline smaller and narrower. Capitula 20-150 and more, corymbs 3-7 cm broad, peduncles 1-3 mm. Involucre broadly ovoid, 3-4 x 2-4 mm. Outer phyllaries linear-setaceous, acuminate or acute, inner linear-lanceolate, ± obtuse, without scarious margins, tomentose. Ligules 5-6, yellow, 1 mm; disc flowers 15-30. Fl. 5-7. Steppe, volcanic slopes, sandy soils, wheat-fields, 450-2500 m.
