Stems 45-90 cm, angled, glabrous or sparingly and minutely puberulent. Leaves in whorls of 3-8, 100-160 x 12-20 mm, narrowly elliptic, narrowly lanceolate or linear, glabrous above, minutely puberulent on veins beneath, sessile. Peduncles 1-2-flowered, glabrous. Flowers not scented; perianth 8-9 x 2.5-3 mm, ± contracted in middle. Filaments sparingly puberulent. Berry red at first, becoming dark purple, 6.5-8.5 mm diam. Fl. 6. Picea forest, Rhododendron scrub, rocky granite slopes, 1450-2435 m.
