Much branched, minutely puberulous, spiny perennial, 18-40 cm. Stem striate, terete, sometimes grooved. Basal leaves ± oblong, 10-20 x 4-7 cm, 1-2-pinnate or pinnatisect with rigid, spinose, trigonous, narrow triangular-lanceolate segments, 2-30 x 1-3 mm; petioles trigonous. Rays 4-8, unequal, ½ -¾ length of bracts, thickening in fruit. Bracts 4-6, ovate-lanceolate, spinose, unequal, persistent, 10-18 x 1,5-3 mm. Bracteoles c. 5, ovate or oblong, apex long acuminate or mucronate, unequal, 4-10 mm. Pedicels 8-14, ½ as long as bracteoles. Sepals unequal. 'Fruit' oblong-ovoid, 7-10 x 4-5 mm, crowned with c. 2 mm pedicels; style 2-3 mm. FI. 7-9. Chalk or salt steppe, dry arable or fallow fields, 500-1750 m.
