Bushy, often ± rounded, softly pubescent perennial or biennial, 20-45 cm. Stem terete, smooth or grooved. Basal leaves oblong, ovate or triangular-ovate, 12-40 x 3,5-15 cm, 2-pinnate, segments 0,5-1 cm, ± ovate, cuneate, irregularly toothed to deeply incised or pinnatifid. Uppermost leaves simple, toothed in upper half. Rays 2-3, ± equalling bracts. Bracts 1-5, ovate-lanceolate, 3-5 mm. Bracteoles c. 6, ovate, acute, c. 3 mm, thickening and fusing with top of rays in fruit and reflexing. Pedicels c. 12, shorter than bracteoles. Stylopodium of outer flowers flat, ± conspicuous at flowering stage. 'Fruit' ± pyramidal, 5-10 x4-8 mm. Fl. 8-9. Dry hills, chalky ravines, steppe,fallow fields, nr. s.l.-1100 m.
