Erect annual, up to 70 cm, slightly mealy. Leaves 2-8 x 1-6 cm, broadly deltoid-ovate, acute, coarsely and irregularly toothed, rarely nearly entire; teeth acute and ± incurved. Inflorescence terminal and axillary, of loosely branched cymes. Perianth segments with a dorsal swelling near the apex. Pericarp strongly adherent. Seed acutely margined, closely and minutely pitted. FI. 5-7. Waste places, roadsides, rocks, seashores, s.I.-400 m.

Almost cosmopolitan: introduced in N. America and Australia.
